With E3 come and gone the time to get excited for the future of video games is now. We’ve moved on to a new console cycle with the Xbox One, Play Station 4, and Wii U now installed in millions of homes around the world and now fans are getting glimpses of what this generation will hold. There’s already been a few blockbusters to hit the stores, namely “Watch Dogs” and “Murdered: Soul Suspect,” but now new titles are on the horizon.

E3 has confirmed many new installments to fan favorite series as well as new IP’s that can potentially revolutionize gaming as we know it. Here are few upcoming “next-gen” games that should have gamers everywhere excited.

First up, new installments in old series:

“Halo 5: Guardians”

One of the most popular sci-fi series on any medium, “Halo” will be coming back to consoles in 2014. “Halo 5: Guardians” is 343 Studios’ second time helming “Halo,” after the critically-acclaimed joyride that was “Halo 4.”

This particular installment still has a lot of mystery surrounding it. There’s the return of The Arbiter (once again voiced by Keith David), the question of how connected Ridley Scott’s “Halo” television series will be to the games, and perhaps most importantly, who is Agent Locke? The new character was introduced in the second, and first official, trailer for the game and is featured prominently on the game’s title art. There’s no doubt “Guardians” will be another best-seller but it remains to be seen if 343 can keep the magic going.

In other “Halo” news, 343 will also be releasing re-mastered versions of the series’ prior entries with “Halo: The Master Chief Collection.” Every “Halo” game on one disk for $60.00 is tough to beat.

“Assassin’s Creed: Unity”

The next series returning to fans is “Assassin’s Creed.” The series has been releasing annually for a while and never seems to disappoint, except for perhaps “Assassin’s Creed III.” After the huge success that was “Black Flag,” Ubisoft is showing no signs of slowing down.

This fall fans will be treated to the first multi-player game in the series, “Assassin’s Creed: Unity.” Unity is set in the French Revolution and promises to deliver everything fans have been asking for … except a female protagonist. Perhaps next time–for now four playable assassins and the ability to play online with friends will have to do.

“Far Cry 4″

The last “Far Cry” game was advertised as “Skyrim with guns” and it didn’t disappoint. “Far Cry 3″ was one of the most expansive and innovative games ever made with a story that was equal parts ridiculous and awe-inspiring, something only “Far Cry” can do.

The inevitable sequel “Far Cry 4” hits stores in November and looks to be even bigger, more ridiculous, and more fun than any of its predecessors. The next gen technology has absolutely been taken advantage of; the gameplay released thus far looks incredible. So get ready to “tear sh** up” with the King of Kyrat (an early nominee for best new character of the year).

“Batman: Arkham Knight”

The game I’m personally most excited for is the conclusion to the “Arkham” trilogy. “Batman: Arkham Knight” looks to be one of the best games of the year and is a surefire Game of the Year contender (not that any of the previously mentioned games aren’t).

“Arkham City” is without  doubt my favorite game I’ve ever played and I cannot understate my excitement for the followup. The chance to drive a weaponized Batmobile around the entirety of Gotham City is something that’s going to keep me up at night while I wait for this game’s release.

All of the bat’s villains are back, and brought to life with eye-popping visuals, in what looks to be the most ambitious Arkham story yet. I’m excited to learn more about the game’s “original character,” the Arkham Knight (pictured above). Hopefully he’s not as original as we’ve been led to believe and this game turns out to be a grand scale adaptation of “Under the Red Hood” with Scarecrow’s master plan, a criminal gang war and much more thrown into the mix.

Along with all these franchise installments comes another exciting game that falls loosely into the category. One of the best games of last year (or any year), “The Last of Us” is being remastered for next gen and will be releasing onto the PS4 later this month.

Next we have several new games that will soon become household names. One has been long hyped and the other two took the world by storm at E3.

Destiny

The most hyped new IP at E3 was without a doubt “Destiny.”  This game, from the makers of “Halo: Combat Evolved” through “Halo: Reach” is an open world sci-fi shooter that looks equal parts “Halo,” “Mass Effect” and “Elder Scrolls.” The game creates a new and interesting sci-fi world that will allow players to explore an ever-changing universe while fully designing and customizing their character.

Bungie has a lot riding on this game, as it is their first since the split with Microsoft, but all signs point to this being a resounding success. “Destiny” looks like the next great sci-fi franchise and has fans all over the world clamoring for the beta and eventually, the game.

Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive” is one of the more unusual games to come into the spotlight in recent memory. The game features a ridiculous story that allows players free roam of the ludicrous world invented by Insomniac Games. The gameplay appears moderately reminiscent of “Saints Row IV” but is genuinely unique in every way.

This game breathes pure fun and should, as a console exclusive, provide life to the struggling Xbox One.  The developers built it to be able to incorporate new ideas and fan feedback instantaneously, so if nothing else it will be sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

No Man’s Sky

The last game on this list is unlike anything else on the market. “No Man’s Sky” has garnered massive amounts of attention since E3 and might be the most interesting game to release this coming year. The gameplay is entirely exploration based, with players beginning on the outskirts of the universe with the eventual goal of teaching the center.

Along the way gamers will discover new planets and new species while fighting and exploring their way through a vast, procedurally generated, galaxy. “No Man’s Sky” is currently a console exclusive for PS4 but developers have left the idea of expanding to other systems open.

Those were some of the highlights this year, but gaming has much more to offer. Were there any games I missed? What has you excited this coming year? Or are you still too bummed about the lack of Fallout/Mass Effect 4?  Let me know in the comments.
