As a (likely) poor college student, you’ll look for ways to save on virtually anything. When it comes to living as a college student, you might even be shuffled around.

You could be changing roommates or even changing locations at a rapid pace. However, there are some essential items of furniture you’ll need to keep your apartment livable. Here are 10 pieces of furniture you can’t live without.

1. A bed

Perhaps the most coveted time of any student’s life is the time they devote to sleeping. Without a nice rest, you’re bound to have more stress in your life (as if you didn’t have enough already). A comfortable mattress is an essential. Not an air mattress, not a pile of blankets, a real mattress. A good mattress is a good investment to make.

2. A bed frame

If you want to go full adult with buying a nice mattress, you might consider not letting it rest on your probably dirty floor. Bed frames are surprisingly more important (and portable) than you think. They give your entire bedroom a literal lift. Having a bed frame underneath your mattress is the best way to make your room look altogether more sophisticated and cohesive.

3. A desk

As a student, perhaps the most important thing is your studies. Studying becomes infinitely more difficult if you’re laid back in your comfy bed or crunched over your kitchen table. A desk, or just a small table, is essential for creating a place to work. Your brain will begin to distinguish the difference between when you’re trying to sleep and when you’re trying to study if you’re sitting at a desk. Also, you’ll have a place for all your papers and books rather than throwing them on the floor.

4. A kitchen table

Similar to your desk’s role to your studies, a kitchen table is a complete necessity to your apartment. You don’t want all  your crumbs and spills to be all over your bed. A kitchen table is also great for any projects you might need space for. Your kitchen table doesn’t have to be pristine or made of expensive wood to do the trick. Lots of functionable tables, and lots of other furniture, can be rented or found really cheap at flea markets or garage sales.

5. Multiple chairs

With that kitchen table, you’re going to need some chairs. The most crucial part about buying or renting chairs for your table is that their height works well.

6. A couch

Another thing you’re going to need if you want to have other people over. A couch is the hub for socializing in any apartment. Truly the centerpiece of all living rooms anywhere, the couch is invaluable to your space. Couches come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Many people will also try and get rid of couches frequently, so ask around. You may just find some cheap, even free, couches.

7. Living room chairs/loveseat

Besides just a couch, you may want other places to sit. Maybe a loveseat. Maybe a plush recliner. Maybe just some chairs with fun fabric. Ultimately, it’s up to you, but extra seating never hurts as an addition to your apartment. Plus, fun chairs are an excellent way to add comfort or color, maybe even both, to your place.

8. A bedside table

If you’ve taken my advice and bought or rented a bed with a bed frame, you’re going to need something elevated to put your eyeglasses on. A bedside table may seem like an afterthought to your other important furniture pieces, but don’t underestimate its value. Bedside tables are great for lamps, books, alarm clocks, and other things you need at arm’s reach.

9. Shelving

While you may be buying new furniture, you might already have lots of preexisting stuff. Truthfully, your apartment probably won’t have much space so you’ll need some way to store it. Vertical shelving is awesome. You can store much more of your stuff by taking up air space rather than ground space. You can even put the cute things on display.

10. Trashcans

Trashcans aren’t exactly furniture. They are, however, vital to your apartment. You’re going to need a variety of trashcans. A large one for your kitchen. Some small ones for your bathroom and bedroom. Nothing feels worse than finding garbage and realizing you have nowhere to put it. Trust me, buy some cheap trashcans before you move and you’ll thank yourself.

As a student, your apartment may not be the most posh living space you’ve ever set foot in. However, this doesn’t mean you have to live terribly. Having a functional living space is imperative to your quality of life and this means having essential furniture. It doesn’t have to be designer, or even great quality, it just has to be there. And really, getting these pieces isn’t as difficult as it seems and with a little effort, you can even find them for very little money.
