Experts say that it is never too early to start networking. No matter where you are, who you are with, and what you need to do, being social always pays off in the future. College environments are perfect for practicing and achieving a successful network. There will be no other period in your life where it is optimal to make mistakes, try again, and learn your way around social engagements.

It is especially important if you wish to get a job immediately upon graduation. Knowing people in the field of your interest will help tremendously with your chances of employment. Also, you never know who could be a valuable contact later on. It may be worth it, in the long run, to expand your social circle outside of work related zones.

Not everyone is naturally talented at networking and making others feel close to them. It goes without saying that feeling comfortable while talking and mingling with people takes a lot of work. For those who are introverted, it may be one of the worst possible activities to get involved in. However, there is too much evidence that suggests that networking is an inevitable component to succeeding in your field. If it can’t be avoided, one must be properly readied to enjoy it.

Networking can be seen as marketing oneself to others and selling the appealing qualities. While it helps to appear as a welcoming and benevolent character, it is also about paying attention and giving compliments. That is, enough to seem genuinely interested in what they have to say and to express convincingly that their opinion is in line with your thoughts.

Also, it would be better to follow up after meeting them to maintain the connection for future references. LinkedIn and Twitter are both excellent means of keeping in touch and forming professional alliances.

Internships, career fairs, and research are sites that college students can utilize to their maximum potential. They present opportunities to express enthusiasm for your studies and naturally start conversations through questions. It is a great advantage to be able to appear as a passionate, but an inexperienced college student who needs a mentor. The professionals will feel appreciated for their knowledge and advice that they can provide. Even if a person is far from being a social butterfly, events and opportunities are abundant for college students to get accustomed.

Above all, reaching out is the key to networking. Taking initiatives eliminates possibilities of missed opportunities. Only by breaking out of your shell will you achieve meeting new people and securing your future through relationships. Instead of waiting for someone to recognize your potential, it would be faster and more efficient to be the person that starts a handshake and an introduction.
