Dorm Essentials Review: Keurig® MINI Plus Brewing System

By Amy Wagner on December 9, 2012

Are you in the market for a new coffeemaker for your dorm room or apartment? Look no further than the Keurig® MINI Plus Brewing System. It is not only incredibly simple to use, but it also has a stylish, sleek look that will compliment any college living space. It allows the owner a choice between three cup sizes – 6 oz., 8 oz, and 10 oz. Simply pour your desired amount of water into the single-use water reservoir, insert a K-Cup® into the brewer, press the “brew” button, and place the mug under the spout. Two minutes later, you will have a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, or cider. And cleanup? Simply remove the K-Cup from the brewer and throw it away. The removable drip tray also makes cleanup even easier than with a regular coffeemaker.

“But it’s a coffeemaker!” you might say. “It can’t possibly make all of those drinks!” Yes, but the K-Cup packs compatible with your new machine of pure coffee magic come in many varieties that include not only coffee, but also various brands of tea, hot cocoa, cider, and iced fruit beverages. But what is a K-Cup pack? It is a prepared small plastic cup topped with a foil seal containing coffee grounds or other drink mixes. There are more than 250 flavors of K-Cup packs available today, sold by brands including Green Mountain Coffee, Starbucks, Folgers, Gloria Jean’s, Coffee People, and Celestial Seasonings. There are certain K-Cups released seasonally as well, including lemonade for the summer, pumpkin spice for the fall, and gingerbread, spicy eggnog, and golden French toast for winter.

For people who want to use their own coffee or tea as opposed to prepackaged versions, Keurig also makes a reusable coffee filter called the “My K-Cup.” It is compatible with most Keurig brewer models, including the MINI Plus. The My K-Cup filter is an alternative to its disposable counterparts, allowing Keurig owners to use their preferred ground coffee (or loose tea) both for preference as well as reducing expenses. Other brands of reusable filters are available in grocery stores as well as on amazon.com.

I purchased my Keurig MINI about one year ago, and it still functions perfectly, even after sometimes being used multiple times a day. However, all Keurig brewers do come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, as well as a one-year warranty. Even better, when you register your brewer, therefore starting the warranty, you will receive a coupon for two free boxes of K-Cups with the purchase of two boxes on the Keurig website. This is not the only merchant from which to purchase K-Cups – they can also be purchased at any grocery store, Kohl’s, Macy’s, amazon.com, or at any number of online businesses dedicated to selling coffee. It’s easy; just Google “K-Cup,” compare prices, and soon you will be able to wake up and smell the coffee!
