4 Reasons It Makes Sense to Pursue Medical Coding Training

By Uloop Guest Writer on April 30, 2013

In doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals, there are many medical billing coders that are not certified but due to the demand for experienced and trained coders those who are untrained may find themselves looking to make a career change—or get certified in coding to ensure accurate billing.  If you’re not certified or want to be, these four reasons will show you why medical coding training is an absolute must-do.

1. Industry Demand for Trained Coders

The Medical Billing and Coding World reports that by year 2020, medical employers will demand coders are not only professionally trained but also have a CPC certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Coders are relied upon to ensure CPT (current procedural terminology) codes are correctly matched to ICD (international classification of diseases) codes. This helps not only to prevent fraudulent claims but also guarantees doctors, hospitals and clinics will be properly reimbursed for services rendered. Without this training and knowledge, accuracy becomes questionable in this field where accuracy and attention to detail are an absolute must.

2. People Are Living Longer

Along with many baby boomers now reaching retirement age, technology and science advancements is making it possible for people to live longer. Longevity in age means people will see their doctors more for general aging issues and checkups as well as unexpected illness visits for flus, infections and unforeseen medical conditions.

With people living longer the demand will rise for trained billing coders in all areas of the medical world. This demand also means the building of more clinics, outpatient procedures as well as doctor and hospital growth.

3. The Chance to Be a Leader in the Field

Those who receive medical coding training or AAS medical reimbursement & coding instruction before the industry demands will fare better than those who wait or put education on hold.

Jumping on the bandwagon prior to industry need ensures job safety and possible advancement. Many coders rise in their careers to office coordinators or managers who help to oversee the day-to-day operations behind the scenes.

4. Great Compensation and Job Growth

According to an AAPC survey, medical coders who are not trained and certified realized a salary of approximately $37,700 where those trained and certified realized annual salaries of $45,400—a $7,700 per year difference in wages.

The same AAPC survey also showed years of experience in the field once certified also makes a difference in annual salaries. For example, a coder with only one year of experience may receive approximately $34,500 but once they have six or seven years under their belt, these same trainers can expect to receive an annual salary of $41,800 or more.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the need for qualified medical coders will increase by 21 percent from 2010 to 2020 which is what the BLS says is a “faster than average” growth.

Those looking to find a career in this growing job field would do well to receive the proper schooling and certification in order to be successful and afford the opportunity to not only excel, but advance. The medical industry will make a change and seek out only those who have taken the time to prepare by obtaining the proper teaching so now is the time to boost your career goals with the proper education.
