I have a crush on a fellow grad student in my department. Is dating within your own department okay or should it be discouraged?

Grad school is a great place to meet people, and if you think you and this person might hit it off, I don't see why not! Of course, you want to make sure that it would go somewhere before you pursue it, as grad departments are small and that could get awkward if you were to break up, but hey, that's life! Why avoid something that could be really good?
I feel like this is probably a more common experience than people think! It's easy to start crushing on people that have similar interests and are in close proximity to you. By the time many people are in grad school, they should be able to control their personal and professional lives like adults. I would say that as long as both parties are interested in pursuing something despite the potential professional consequences, I wouldn't discourage it.
I feel like most people would say to avoid this, but it is impossible to deny your own feelings. I think you should feel out the situation and see if this person feels the same way. If he/she doesn't, then I would not pursue it. However, if he/she does, then have a conversation and lay your concerns out on the table and try to find a solution together!
I would probably discourage it -- as much as you might have in common with the person you have a crush on and be able to see them easily, you don't want to make things awkward. You don't know for sure that they like you too, which means trying to find out or asking them out can make things uncomfortable if they turn you down. Plus, if you did date and things didn't work out, you'd have to see them often and that could make things weird too. Unless you feel really strongly about this person and know they feel the same about you, I'd advise you to expand your romantic pool and look elsewhere!
